The always-popular image, Deep In The Curl, a diatom genus Gyrosigma balticum,  was selected as a feature in a new group for us called Art for Sale.    The image will also appear on their Facebook Fan page.  Great exposure for a favorite diatom.

New Dynamic Designs

Peach Heart

Teal Opus
I have just completed two new designs in kaleidoscope form that are really eye-catching.  These kaleidoscope images lend themselves very well to coaster and tile designs. Of course, the are derived from diatom/dinoflagellate images that I have hand colorized.

Diatoms Keep On Showing Up!

Page from Academy Of Natural Sciences Annual Report 2010

I was directed today to a site of the
Academy of Natural Sciences that showed their 2010 Annual Report that contained the feature image associated with our exhibition held there last year titled: A Many-Colored Glass:  Ethereal Images of Microscopic Marine Life',  August 7 - October 31, 2010.

And...A Feature!

Goldtangle

Going to a rather off-hand group this time, I thought I would submit 'Goldtangle' for consideration.  To my great and happy surprise, it was chosen as a feature. So, I can add this to the growing collection of recognition for the abstract images drawn from nature.

Golden Version - Front Page Star

Seen at the far right, the gold version of Midnight Triangle named Goldtangle has just been chosen as a homepage image in the moving banner.

New Kaleidoscope From the Depths

A kaleidoscope design derived from the 'Midnight Triangle' image.  It is always amazing to me how certain textures and features exhibit themselves in nontraditional ways when using this method to illuminate the abstract quality of the diatoms and dinoflagellates.

New Image

Midnight Triangle
One of my newest creations is Midnight Triangle.  It is the diatom Trigonium alternans, that I have digitally colorized. It is a fascinating shape, as they all are. It is great to start adding some new ones to the collection.

Amazing!

Through My Friend’s Eyes
I was just notified by the folks at RedBubble that a viewer has purchased 9 of my colorized images! That's amazing, and pretty impressive.  Whoever it is, thank you so very much.  It is truly appreciated. This image on the right is one of the nine, and the only abstract image of the group.

This image was also chosen by my good friend 'Owl'  to be part of her personal favorites collection of images.  She is very good in supporting  kaleidoscope images of my algae colorizations.  If you click on the title below the image, you will go to her current selections.

PSA Auction Results

I heard from Dr. Rick McCourt yesterday, regarding the Phycological Society of America, Annual Meeting July 13-16.  We donated a print for auction, and from what Rick said :  'The auction went well, and the print sold for over the list price ($75), so PSA thanks you for the donation".  It was a pleasure to donate, and good news that the meeting was a success.

These images make excellent decorative pieces suitable for hanging, or as ceramic tiles or drink coasters. They may be ordered through me.

More Information

I just received a post from Dr. Rick McCourt about the upcoming 2011 Phycological Society of America Annual Meeting, 13-16 July 2011 in Seattle, WA.

"We will auction one of the prints and the others will be for sale in our headquarters room.  The audience is a mix of scientists and students who study algae, from ecology to taxonomy to biofuels, and I'm excited that the beauty of the prints will provide them with wonderful art for their offices and labs."

Here's hoping that it is truly a success, and that the prints help PSA in achieving their goals for this meeting.  Can't wait to hear about the results!

'Water Jug'
The second event is the 2011 Phycological Society of America Annual Meeting, 13-16 July 2011 in Seattle, WA.  We have donated several images to the Society through Richard 'Rick' McCourt, Ph.D. These images will be part of their annual auction.  Hopefully attendees will purchase the images to support students and provide scholarship funds to the association.

New publicity for the diatom collection.

A writer from the UK recently contacted me after seeing the collection on Flickr, and asked if she could write a story about the collection and us.  After some conversation, I said yes.  I was contacted by her publisher two days ago who told me that the images and story had just appeared in two publications: The Daily Mail, and Telegraph.  The links are below.  I am awaiting confirmation regarding another publication at this time. Really exciting to see the word spreading.

Publicity

A recent on-line research exploration of mine uncovered, surprisingly, a nice article written by Steven Farrell, an honors student, at Drexel University. Steven  visited the exhibition at The Academy of Natural Sciences in late October, just before the exhibit closed, and wrote of his observations about the exhibition.

The entire article can be read at this link:  http://drexelculturalpassport.com/article/science-and-nature/sn101510.

Good to have a younger persons impressions of our efforts.

Environmental Graffiti

A very nice writer, named Michele Collett, from Canada, has just written an article about the diatoms and dinoflagellates that I have colorized, and my associate, Dr. Paul E. Hargraves.

The online publication is called Environmental Graffiti, originating in England. http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/news-diatoms-art.  I think the site is very interesting and covers  a variety of topics that concern the environment and science in a very informative way.

Fire Rays is an Award Winner

Fire Rays

This Kaleidoscope image called Fire Rays, was selected as one of the 10 best in the February RedBubble challenge in the Imperfect Kaleidoscope category.  This is a favorite of mine, I love the flame tips that seem to dance in a very subtle way.  Amazing to be able to make art out of nature look so interesting and beautiful.
