After Christmas

Thought that these Kaleidoscope designs would brighten up the day, and remind us all of the beauty of the images transformed in this way. These were made from original colorized diatom and dinoflagellate images.

A New Face

Digital colorization of an electron microscopic image of a diatom - Tirceratium.

I like the perspective of this creature, and the floating dimensional feeling that it imparts.

One Of The Newest Awards

Just found out that our image, "Push Me-Pull Me", was selected as a new feature in 'Underwater Creatures' at RedBubble.  This is nice recognition for a really interesting image.  You can view all the images available at RedBubble by clicking on the icon image in the side bar at the right.

Holiday Gift Giving

Tote found @ CafePress
The Exhibit Catalog makes an excellent gift for anyone interested in diatoms, dinoflagellates, or microscopic marine life in general.  These images have been digitally colorized by me over a period of 4+ years.  Those in the catalog/exhibit, represent select images from a large library.  Some of them can also be viewed on Flickr.  Both the catalog and Flickr can be accessed in the side-bar at the right of this column.  You can also purchase select gifts from CafePress - our little store.

Not Forgotten

The dinoflaellate genus Protoceratium - 'Scales and Shells II'
In looking through my files, I saw this image, and realized that I should post it.  It is the alternative colorization of the red version that is the most popular image in the collection.  Somehow, I like this one very much too.  Hard to decide which one I like better.  It is also available for purchase as a print.

ISSHA Conference Update

This morning I received an email from Dr. Anke Kremp, regarding the successful ISSHA Conference that was held in Crete last week:

"Both your micrograph artworks were admired by a lot of people when we had them on display before the auction, and got them very quickly sold! All together the auction was a great success. We were able to raise more money than ever before for the travel awards, and the income from the auction will help more than 10 students to get to Korea in two years."

This is certainly good news, and I/we are so glad that we could contribute to the program.

Greetings to all International Conference on Harmful Algae attendees

The dinoflagellate genus Protoceratium, "Scales and Shells"

Greetings everyone!  What a pleasure it has been corresponding with Anke Kremp, and what a pleasure it is for both Dr. Paul Hargraves and me to be able to offer one of our favorite micrographs as a donation for your annual event. I hope that the bidding will be fast and furious for this special image. It is one of my personal favorites.  Wishing you all the best during your conference.

On The Inside

Just thought that visitors might like to see additional pages from the Exhibit Catalog that I produced.  It is shown on this page [at the top, right corner], but the view does not include all the images.  The reproduction is superb, and is a nice thing to have on hand since it represents 24 of the most popular images that I have colorized in the past couple of years.  Take a look----->

The catalog is available for purchase through Blurb.com., for $15.95 US [shipping extra].

Two Features are better than one

These two Kaleidoscope images were selected as features for the week in "A Kaleidoscope Kraze'. They were derive from these two images ----->

It's amazing to see the intricate, and abstract results that can be achieved. The Art of Science continues.

All I can says is - WOW!  What an event, what a place, what wonderful people.  Hard to try to digest all of the events of the past two days.  This is a bit of what it looks like from the front entrance, the Gallery with it's rich chocolate gray colored walls, great lighting and great big windows. More later, but for now here it is ....PS - did I say the images GLOWED with color and light!

The Big Announcement!

The Academy of Natural Sciences - Art Of Science Gallery Exhibit

A MANY-COLORED GLASS: ETHEREAL IMAGES OF MICROSCOPIC MARINE LIFE
Saturday, August 7 - Sunday, October 31, 2010

Art and science come together in A Many-Colored Glass, an exhibit of 24 color-enhanced photomicrographs of diatoms(single-celled algae) and dinoflagellates created by Florida scientist Dr. Paul Hargraves and Rhode Island artist Fay Darling. The beauty of the diatom and its scientific role as a key indicator of water quality are explored. The Academy of Natural Sciences' collection of these important microalgae is the biggest in North America and includes invaluable survey and research data covering many years.

July Celebration

I thought I would begin the month by creating this very interesting Mandala from an early image that looks lovely in this rendering.

Well, as an addendum, this image was chosen as a feature in  RedBubble's 'Underwater Creatures' group as of July 2.  Nice recognition.

First RedBubble Image Sale!

Our first RedBubble Image Sale!  How exciting.  Someone bought a framed 8x10 print of  this image - 'Scoop'. Makes a very interesting graphic for a Diatom.  Thank you, whoever your are.

Another Dimension

I rendered this image as a kaleidoscope.  At first, with a white background, it looked rather ordinary, but by changing the background to black, the image suddenly became almost 3-dimensional.  I like it very much.

Raptor Redux

Probably one of the most intricate and complex images I have worked on.  It is the diatom Entomoneis [it may be a new species]

Another Version

I am trying to decide which version of this image I like better.  I am inclined to like this better than the earlier version because more details are visible.  It is the dinoflagellate genus Gonyaulax.

An Exciting Announcement!

I am happy [thrilled] to announce that the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, [http://www.ansp.org/] has asked me/us to create an exhibit to be shown there late this summer.  The dates are August 7 to October 31.  We will be exhibiting 24 images of the colorized diatom/dinoflagellates that you often view here on this Blog.  What an honor.  It will be hard deciding which images to include in our selection of 24.  As of today, we don't have a title for the exhibition yet, but will announce it as soon as we do.
I'll keep posting about this as time goes on.

New Feature

One of my favorite images, 'EarsnNose', was just selected as a feature in RedBubble's Underwater Creatures category. Especially nice to be seen by so many, and recognized as a Featured Member too.  [the diatom genus Triceratium]

A Favorite Gets The Nod

This image of a diatom is one of the first images that I colorized. It was a thrill to see it recognized like this! As time has passed, I have been able to refine my technique, but this treatment really captured the sense of movement I wanted to create. Recognized as a feature in 'Underwater Creatures' in the RedBubble gallery.

Nice Recognition

One of the top, if not the 'top' Diatom images in our collection of over 55 colorizations, has been recognized as a Feature in the "Underwater Portraiture" Group  in RedBubble.
